A Glance of Fisheries

Since 1963, Department of Fisheries, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada has made significant contributions to the development of fisheries in Indonesia. These contributions include the preparation of human resources and their capacity building through formal academic education, community service, and informal training and workshops. Additionally, the department oversees the governance of planning, monitoring, and managing fisheries throughout Indonesia. Academically, Seminar Nasional Tahunan Hasil Penelitian Perikanan dan Kelautan Universitas Gadjah Mada (SEMNASKAN-UGM) has established itself as the oldest national-wide fisheries conference in Indonesia, marking its 22nd year of existence. SEMNASKAN-UGM serves as a gathering place for governance, academics, and stakeholders, with the aim of building a better fisheries and aquaculture system in Indonesia through scientific-based policy and evidence. Recognizing that fisheries issues are not limited to a state or nation, but require a global perspective and collaboration, the Department of Fisheries UGM launched the first International Symposium on Marine and Fisheries Research (ISMFR) in 2015. This event is now held biannually, with the next one scheduled for 2025. The Department of Fisheries UGM contributes to the development of fisheries by gathering scientific data and establishing a connection between academia and government, fostering a shared understanding for responsible, sustainable fisheries and aquaculture in Indonesia and globally.
